Is Uber's Business Model Really Unsustainable?

On November 2, 2022, Wednesday, Mark MacGann, the former chief lobbyist of Uber in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said that although Uber was improving its working culture, its business model was still absolutely "unsustainable". Mr. McGann disclosed about Uber’s 124,000 confidential documents. These documents dated back to a period between 2013 and 2017, including emails, SMS messages, chat records and other official important documents in 40 countries and regions.

 

First of all, we must admit that Mr. McGann does have some confidential materials. These materials revealed some secret information about Uber, such as illegal operation in some countries, duping police and bribing government officials. However, according to Brand Value (China) network, what Mr. McGann said was history, which had little to do with Uber's business model. Uber’s business model has something to do with law, current market, buyers and sellersetc.  In short, Brand Value (China) network does not think that Mr. McGann has enough solid evidence to overturn Uber’s business model.

Secondly, let's analyze Uber's business operation model. Uber is a provider of global taxi services and its business mode consists of the following five steps:

 

Step one, a customer can book a taxi from the Uber App by using GPS and internet.

 

Step two, a customer can send out a message through the Uber App that includes price, car type and the location.

 

Step three, the driver can answer the Uber App and accept the request.

 

Step four, the driver picks up the customer and the ride begins.


Step five, after the successful ride, the customer can get out of the taxi and pay the bill, rate the taxi service by using the Uber App.


According to Brand Value (China) Network, based on these five scientific steps, customers can book a taxi service by using Uber App within a few minutes, and Uber drivers can also find customers more quickly by using Uber App. Compared with traditional taxi services, Uber can provide a new kind of faster, less expensive taxi service. Hence, Uber’s services are very popular in many countries and win many customers that include travelers, shoppers, etc.   

 

According to Brand Value (China) Network, Uber is the largest online taxi-hailing company in the world and it was founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanick, a college dropout from University of California, Los Angeles and his friend Garret Camp. Uber’s taxi services are available in 70 countries in the world and 60 Chinese cities have Uber’s operation centers. On May 10, 2019, Uber was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.


On the ranking of “The 2nd Daguan· Keweiwei World Brand Value Top 900” released on January 13, 2022, Uber’s brand value was 1585.81 billion RMB, ranking the 148th.
