On July 25, 2023, Tuesday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC; also called Taiwan Semiconductor) announced that it plans to invest 2.9 billion US dollars (NT$90 billion) to set up an advanced chip packaging plant because TSMC has seen a global AI (Artificial Intelligence )boom. This new plant will be based at a science park in Taiwan's northern Hsinchu County near Taipei.  The local park administrators have approved its lease and construction is set to start the second half of 2023. 

      According to C.C. Wei, CEO of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), TSMC plans to double its capacity for advanced packaging in 2024 compared to 2023 because its customers including Nvidia and AMD have strong demand for AI Chips. Advanced packaging is a technical term in the semiconductor industry that means using high-tech methods to aggregate components from various wafters in order to create a more powerful computer chip. Wei also said that TSMC’s chip on wafter on substrate (CoWos) capacity is very tight and that’s why TSMC is increasing its capacity. Hopefully, this tightening will be released in 2024, probably towards the end of 2024.

In terms of consumer electronics, TSMC such as I-phones, supercomputers and automobile chips, TSMC is responsible for 92% of production, while Samsung of Korea controls the remaining 8%. 

TSMC was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. At that time, TSMC was the world’s first dedicated semiconductor foundry and has long been the leading company in its field. Mr. Chang retired in 2018 and Mark became Chairman and C.C. Wei became its Chief Executive Officer. However, most of this company is owned by foreign investors, and the central government of Taiwan is the largest shareholder. In 1997, TSMC is the first Taiwanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Most of the leading fabless semiconductor companies such as AMD, Apple,  Nvidia, are customers of TSMC. What’s more important, TSMC never stops its innovation momentum. According to its press conference, 3nm chips will be mass produced in the end of 2023 and 2nm will also be available to buyers by 2025.
