On Thursday, December 21, 2023, Boeing announced and it handed over a 787 Dreamliner directly to a Chinese airline for the first time since November 2019, a milestone that could open up the possibility of deliveries of the manufacturer’s cash cow, the 737. Max. Privately owned Chinese carrier Juneyao Airlines on Thursday took delivery of the 787-9 aircraft, which departed for China from Everett Paine Field in Washington state on Thursday and is hoped to land in Shanghai Pudong International Airport around 3:30 p.m. local time.

      On Wednesday, Boeing won a key clearance from regulator the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) allowing the planemaker to prepare MAX aircraft for delivery. On December 8, 2023, the CAAC's deputy head told a Boeing executive in Beijing that Boeing was welcome to deepen its development in the Chinese market. However, individual MAX deliveries to China still need approval from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). In July 2023, Boeing Chief Executive David Calhoun said that while Boeing is "not dependent" on more China deliveries, the US company was hopeful that it could soon hand new planes to Chinese carriers.
