In 1765, The Hennessy cognac distillery was founded by an Irish military officer Richard Hennessy, who had served in the army of Louis XV of France. He retired in the Cognac region with his family and began distilling and exporting cognac, first to Great Britain and his native Ireland, then to the United States in 1794. In 1806, he named Jean Fillioux the first Hennessy Master Blender because a member of the Fillioux family had always occupied the role. In 1817, after the Prince Regent (later King George IV) of Britain asked Hennessy to create a "very superior old pale" (VSOP )cognac, VSOP designation was created. In 1870, Maurice Hennessy also created the XO ("extra old") designation. In 1944, Kilian Hennessy, a fifth-generation direct descendant of Richard Hennessy, began assisting his cousin Maurice Hennessy in running the business and went further to promote Hennessy as an international brand by travelling to Ireland, the United States and Asia. In 1971 Kilian Hennessy’s company merged with Moët et Chandon, to create Moët Hennessy. In 1987, Moët Hennessy merged with Louis Vuitton, creating the world's largest luxury brand conglomerate, Louis Vuitton • Moët-Hennessy or LVMH. In 2010, Kilian Hennessy died on the company’s advisory board at the age of 103. Maurice-Richard Hennessy, an eighth generation representative of the Hennessy dynasty, acts as one of the brand's global ambassadors.

          Secondly, Hennessy has a long-standing relationship with African American culture, especially hip hop. For example, the 1992 2Pac song "Hennessy" has been credited with popularizing the drink. It’s synonymous with rap music and African Americans, who are the brand’s major consumers and advocates. According to some historians, African American servicemen encountered cognac in France during World War I and World War II. As of today, Hennessy appears frequently in the lyrics of popular music, and by one estimate the words "Hennessy" or "cognac" are referenced in more than 1,000 songs. In 2019, Maurice-Richard Hennessy was interviewed with the South China Morning Post and admitted that the world ‘Hennessy’ goes well in a song. He then added that he had met several rap artists and was asked to recommend Hennessy, how to drink it and how it’s made.
