Sysco Corporation, the global leader in food service industry, is leading the fight against climate change. In the year of 2019, Sysco announced it was committed to its science-based emissions reduction target to fight climate change in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement. According to its 2021 report, Sysco Corporation has three clear goals: lead by example, elevate the foodservice industry, and reduce operational emissions by 27.5% by 2030.

In 2019, in order to realize its first goal of leading by example, Sysco Corporation, in partnership with NRG Energy, an American electricity company, started a project to use renewable energy in Houston and Dallas Metro Area. This project consisted of three solar energy sites which comprised of about 200,000 solar panels on 224 acres. In 2020, this project provided approximately 10% of the Sysco’s total U.S. electricity usage and eliminated about 37,000 tons of CO2 emissions a year.

In order to realize the second goal of elevating the industry, Sysco Corporation added nearly 2,500 electric vehicles to the U.S. fleet. According to a scientific study, replacing one diesel tractor with an electric vehicle (EV) is equivalent to removing more than 10 gas-powered vehicles from the roadwhich can cut CO2 emissions significantly. In the year 2021, Sysco worked with Freightliner Cascadia, to use more battery electric trucks to achieve greater decarbonization. Sysco right now has about 14,000 delivery trucks and is planning to replace 10% of them every year. In this way, Sysco is leading the foodservice industry to go further to protect our planet.

Thirdly, in order to reduce Sysco’s operational emissions by 27.5% by 2030, Sysco featured detailed policies for three commodities that present risks for our environment and climate change: sea food, palm oil and hydrochororofluorocarbons (HCFCs). According to a scientific study, most of Sysco’s seafood is from natural fisheries, 85% of which have been pushed or beyond their limits. To protect these natural fisheries, Sysco decided to source most of its wild caught seafood species from certified fisheries. As for palm oil, a major money driver for destroying natural forests in Indonesia and Malaysia, Sysco in 2018 set a Palm Oil Policy of using only Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in its products. Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are mainly used as refrigerants in Sysco’s products, which contribute to damaging the ozone layer in our earth. To reduce this environmental risk, Sysco increased the use of natural refrigerants (CO2 and NH3) without any global warming potential.

In the year of 2021, Sysco completed a carbon footprint analysis of 17 business units in 8 countries and created a road map to achieve its new climate goals. Sysco also plans to start a supplies engagement program setting emission targets that is line with the Paris Agreement.

According to Brand Value (China) Network, Sysco is a global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, hospitals and schools, hotels, and other customers. Its services include food products and services. Based on China Brand Value Evaluation Standard, Sysco is a responsible company that is leading climate change in foodservice.

On the ranking of “The 2nd Daguan· Keweiwei World Brand Value Top 900” released on January 13, 2022, Sysco’s brand value was 97.65 billion RMB, ranking the 269th.
