BYD Electronics Buys US Firm Jabil’s China Mobility Business for $2.2 Billion

      On August 28, 2023, Chinese automaker BYD announced that its electronic unit reached an agreement with US-based printed circuit board manufacturer Jabil Inc’s Singapore subsidiary to buy its mobility business in China for 15.8 billion yuan ($2.2 billion). According to the agreement, BYD Electronics will acquire the latter’s mobile electronics manufacturing business in the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Wuxi. After the agreement is completed, Jabil Inc. will transfer its operations in both cities to its newly-established entity in Singapore and BYD Electronics will then acquire all shares of the new company.

      Mr. Wang Nianqiang, CEO of BYD Electronics, commented "This acquisition will expand the business of smartphone components and mark the beginning of a new cycle of rapid growth. The acquisition will also ensure long-term sustainable development while creating value for customers and shareholders of the BYD Electronics." In an exchange filing, BYD also said “while improving BE’s market share of products, the acquisition will effectively synergize with BE’s existing products, enhance the overall competitiveness, ensure long-term sustainable development.”

      Kenny Wilson, Chief executive of Jabil Inc. made some positive comments about this move. According to his statement, after the deal is completed, the definitive agreement would enable Jabil Inc. to  “enhance our shareholder-centric capital framework, including incremental share buybacks.” He also added the deal will allow Jabil to further invest in “electric vehicles, renewable energy, healthcare, AI cloud data centers, and other end-markets.” In 2002, Jabil Circuit (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. was founded and its main business incl manufacturing of printed circuit boards. One of its main customers is Apple because Jabil makes components for Apple's iPhones and other Apple devices.

      According to Brand Value(China)Network, BYD Electronic was created as a subsidiary of BYD Co. Ltd in 2002 and it issued an IPO on the Hongkong Stock Exchange in 2007. Its major business has been selling electronic components for consumer electronics products such as smartphones and laptops. In the year of 2020, its business accounted for 38.34% of BYD’s revenue. BYD has production bases both inside and outside of China. Three oversea factories are located in Romania, Hungary and India and its Chinese factories are in Tianjin and Shenzhen.

      On the ranking of “The 3rd Daguan·Keweiwei World Brand Value Top 900” released on March 18, 2023, BYD’s brand value was 206.219 billion RMB, ranking the 113th.Apple’s brand value was 2084.201 billion RMB, ranking the 1st.
