Starbucks Planned to Resume Contract Talks with the Union

On Friday December 8, 2023, Starbucks said that it wanted to get back to the bargaining table after a deadlock of more than six months with the union that represents more than 9,000 of its workers. Sara Kelly, Starbucks’s vice president and chief partner officer wrote an official letter to Lynn Fox, president of Workers United, the parent union of Starbucks Workers United. According to this letter, Starbucks is proposing that bargaining continues with a set of organized stores in January, 2024, which is open to productive steps.

According to the official letter, Ms. Sara Kelly wrote in the letter “We collectively agree, the current impasse should not be acceptable to either of us. It has not helped Starbucks, Workers United or, most importantly, our partners. In this spirit, we are asking for your support and agreement to restart bargaining.” In the letter, Kelly also outlines several conditions to resume negotiations, including no audio or video recording or feeds so that all participants are comfortable with open, honest discussions. Ms. Lynn Fox also made some positive comments in a statement to CNBC  We’ve never said no to meeting with Starbucks. Anything that moves bargaining forward in a positive way is most welcome.”

According to Brand Value (China) Network, Starbucks and the union, Starbucks Workers United, began talks more than a year ago, but negotiations have been fraught. Both parties have accused the opposing side of failing to bargain in good faith. In November, 2023 Starbucks workers conducted their largest-ever labor action, walking out at more than 200 stores on Red Cup Day, one of the chain’s busiest days of the year. However, labor laws don’t require that the employer and union reach a collective bargaining agreement, only that both bargain in good faith. After a year, workers who lose faith in the union can petition to decertify, putting a ticking clock on negotiations.

Starbucks, based on Seattle, was founded in 1971 and it has 32,000 stores in the world. In 1999, Starbucks entered China and as of today, it has about 6,500 stores in more than 230 Chinese cities. Starbucks can successfully attract a large customer base in China, including families, students, and older consumers, due in part to its focus on creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in its stores and offering a range of products and price points to suit different budgets. Based on China Brand Value Evaluation Standard, Starbucks is the leading brand in food and beverage industry. Starbucks is expected to remain on “The World Brand Value Top 900.”

On the ranking of “The 3rd Daguan·Keweiwei World Brand Value Top 900” released on March 18, 2023, Starbucks’  brand value was 216.185 billion RMB, ranking the 103rd.
