Tyson Foods Invests in Protix

On Tuesday October 17, 2023, Tyson Foods, a major US producer of beef, pork and chicken, has reached an agreement for a two-fold investment with Protix, the leading global insect ingredients company in Netherland. The aim of the agreement is to combine Tyson Foods’ global scale and network with Protix’s technology to meet current market of insect ingredients. Tyson Foods will acquire a minority stake by a direct direct equity investment in Protix to help fund its global expansion. In addition, Tyson Foods is working with Protix to build a US factory which will use animal waste to feed black solider flies, which will then be turned into food for pets, poultry and fish. John R. Tyson, chief financial officer of Tyson Foods said those flies were not going into human food at this point.
According to Brand Value (China)Network, Tyson makes some positive comments about this agreement. Tyson said, “Our partnership with Protix represents the latest strategic investment by Tyson Foods in groundbreaking solutions that drive added value to Tyson Foods’ business. The insect lifecycle provides the opportunity for full circularity within our value chain, strengthening our commitment to building a more sustainable food system for the future.”
Protix is the largest insect protein company which was founded in 2009 by CEO Kees Aarts. Headquartered in Dongen, Netherlands,Protix operates the world's largest insect factory, located in Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands. Kees Aarts, CEO of Protix, made some positive comments “We are very excited to announce the next step in our international growth strategy. Tyson Foods’ and Protix’s strategic partnership advances our joint work towards creating high-quality, more sustainable protein using innovative technology and solutions. Moreover, we can immediately use their existing byproducts as feedstock for our insects. This agreement is a major milestone for Protix and significantly accelerates our ambition to grow through international partnerships.”
Founded by John W. Tyson in 1935, Tyson Foods is an American multinational corporation based in Springdale, Arkansas that operates in the food industry. As of today, Tyson Foods is the world's second-largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork and it annually exports the largest percentage of beef out of the United States. Tyson Foods entered China in 2001 and has its headquarters in Shanghai. In 2001, Tyson Foods opened its first factory in China in 2001 and now has four research and development centres, several processing plants and dozens of breeding farms. Tyson Foods revenue for the twelve months ending June 30, 2023 was $53.270B, a 1.75% increase year-over-year. Tyson Foods annual revenue for 2022 was $53.282B, a 13.25% increase from 2021.
