On July 29, 2023 Friday at an annual semiconductor conference, U.S. Chipmaker- Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)announced that it would invest about $400 million in India over the next five years and will build its largest design center in the tech hub of Bengaluru. The announcement was made by Mark Papermaster, AMD’s Chief Technology Officer. AMD will plan to open a new design centre campus in Bengaluru by the end of 2023 and create 3,000 new engineering jobs before 2028. The new 500,000-square-foot (55,555 square yards) campus will increase AMD's office footprint in India to 10 locations across cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. AMD started its India operations in New Delhi in 2001, currently it employs over 6,500 employees.
According to Brand Value (China) Network, AMD’s investment in a new design center can boost the Indian government’s plan of creating a semiconductor ecosystem. In 2001, India unveiled a $10 billion incentive programme for the chip sector, but the plan did not go as expected. In June 2023, the Indian government started re-inviting applications for building semiconductor facilities in India. In the year of 2022, Indian semiconductor industry in 2022 was $27 Billion, with over 90% being imported, and therefore a significant external dependence for Indian chip consumers. Imported semiconductors are from countries such as China, America and Japan. That’s the reason why India wants to become a semiconductor hub and share the stage with the top leaders in the global semiconductor industry.
According to Brand Value (China) Network, the global semiconductor market size was USD 527.88 billion in 2021 and totaled $ 599.6 billion in 2022, and is projected to USD 1,380.79 billion in 2029. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the largest chip manufacturer, providing 54 percent of the world's chips. For reasons including the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a global chip crisis, which can remain through 2023 and into 2024.
AMD is an American multinational semiconductor company based in Santa Clara, California that develops computer processors and related technologies. In 1969, it was founded by Jerry Sanders and a team of professionals. Its early products were memory chips and computer components. As of today, AMD’s main products include microprocessors, workstations and personal computers, etc. Its top rival is Intel, one of the world's largest semiconductor chip manufacturer by revenue. Unlike Intel, AMD outsources production of chips it designs to third-party manufacturers like TSMC. In 2022, AMD's revenue amounted to 23.6 billion U.S. dollars, an 44% increase from the 16.4 billion U.S. dollars recorded in 2021.
On the ranking of “The 3rd Daguan·Keweiwei World Brand Value Top 900” released on March 18, 2023, Intel’s brand value was 611.550 billion RMB, ranking the 29th. TSMC’s brand value was 525.262 billion RMB, ranking the 41st. AMD’s brand value was 35.479 billion RMB , ranking 697th.
